In a Nutshell

You accidentally get swept into the glitzy and treacherous world of showbusiness when boy band Revance’s songwriter goes AWOL — but not before making sure that the group takes you on as his unwilling and inexperienced replacement!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Funny

I have played the main stories of four of the first five routes to be released (songwriter Ryo’s has yet to be released), as well as some of the sequels and special POV stories, and I have to say that there is way more to each character and each route than meets the eye. I had been totally disinterested in the app because I really couldn’t stand how mean, sexist, and/or pervy all the guys seemed to be in the previews, even though they desperately needed the MC to ghostwrite for them; their costume-y performance outfits — default for J-idols like themselves — didn’t help at all either.

The one slight disappointment for me was Takashi; his was the only route I had considered trying initially, but his character didn’t quite make sense to me, even though I only ever looked at him as the ‘mad genius’ he was supposed to be.

I did find the guys’ color-coded bedroom doors both cute and ridiculous at the same time. I was also a bit exasperated by the fact that no one in that house (as in every other Voltage dwelling, apparently) seems to know how to lock bedrooms or bathrooms! (Somebody has to think about updating this tired old device!!!)

The Lowdown

Overall, Voltage did a brilliant job of fleshing out the characters and their stories. I was prepared to be disenchanted and to bemoan my credit card bill, but I was totally blown away by how surprisingly sympathetic the characters were (especially the Revance boys) and how unexpectedly relatable the routes were. Give at least one of the guys a chance, and you’ll be surprised that you want to get to know the rest of the band more in their respective routes!

    1. I actually laughed out loud at this. 😂 You don’t pull any punches; LUVEEET! … To answer your question — they are mostly asshats just in their previews and you will end up falling in love with them, for sure. Altho’ I haven’t played Iori’s route.
